Galuwa students’ Careers Aspiration Day

The second Careers Aspiration Day for Galuwa students was held at the Aboriginal Learning Circle, Hunter TAFE – Tighes Hill Campus on Wednesday 19 October.

Once students arrived at the Aboriginal Learning Circle unit, the first thing on the agenda was to take part in a smoking ceremony.

The next stop was Tighes Hill Campus Library. Wow! this was more like the library they knew! You had to work quietly here and, unlike Newcastle University Library, you were not allowed eat or drink.

Galuwa students learnt about all the different career paths within a library, such as librarian, library technician and library assistant.

The Electronics Faculty was very interesting. They heard how a dairy farmer implemented electronics into his farm and went from milking 150 cows twice a day, to milking 450 cows 4 times a day with the assistance of electronic robots.

In the Mechatronic section, the students saw a number of robotic machines that use air compression to run. They also discovered how the introduction of robots in industry has created more jobs as they continually need maintenance and programming.

The forensic crime scene was extremely interesting. The Galuwa students were fascinated by the bullet hole in the board and they used luminal to find traces of blood and fingerprints.

The Pathology section allowed the Galuwa students to have a more hands-on experience. They used microscopes to look at blood samples and a variety of other samples, such as germs and bacteria. They also had to determine which had more bacteria: the toothbrush or the toilet seat. The toothbrush lost.
